To an extent unparalled in secular societies, the history of Roman Catholic Church is the history of the men who have ruled years –its Popes. Although despots and dictators, kings and generals, may comand more power over men's material lives and destinies, and although the City of Man is divided into warring nations and factions, the Popes of the Roman Catholic Church admit of no like division and cede their sovereignty to no mortal man or nation. To be a Pope is, quite literally, to be the personal Father of all men, to be omnipotent among men, and to govern unaided and alone. In the twentieth century, six men by the vote of their peer and by the simple utterance "acepto" have ascend to the Papacy. For better and for worse, these men have written the history of the Roman Catholic Church has played or failed to play– in regulating the conduct of men and nations.
