The essence of Dussel's thought is presented through the concept of "ethical hermeneutics" which seeks to interpret reality from the viewpoint of what Emmanuel Levinas presents as the "other" - those who are vanquished, forgotten, or excluded from existent socio-political or cultural systems. Barber traces Dussel's development toward Levinas' philosophy through his discussion of the Hegelian dialectic and through the stages of Dussel's own ethical theory.

Includes bibliographical references (p. [161]-174) and index.

CHOICE Review

This trailblazing volume opens an ethical dimension of philosophical hermeneutics and offers a much-needed introduction to the prolific younger-generation liberation theologian and philosopher, Enrique Dussel (from Argentina, and now Mexico), author of The Church in Latin America, 1492-1992 (1992), Ethics and Community (CH, Nov'89), and Ethics and the Theology of Liberation (CH, Jul'78). Barber (St. Louis Univ.) has translated Dussel's The Invention of the Americas (1995) and is the author of books on Alfred Schutz (Social Typifications of the Elusive Other, 1988) and Max Scheler (Guardian of Dialogue, 1993). In this philosophically excellent and well-documented volume--the first introduction to Dussel in English--he traces Dussel's development, starting with a Heideggerian hermeneutics of facticity (philosophy of interpretation that begins with the phenomenological life-world). He shows how Dussel supplements this with a Levinasian ethic of the Other (the vanquished and excluded), and later with a neo-Marxist analysis of living labor as the Other (the poor) in Latin America. The concluding chapter takes up major criticisms of Dussel's philosophy, especially the charge of irrationality. Its principal focus is on German philosopher Karl-Otto Apel's criticisms. Well argued, clear, and coherent, this volume is a fine introduction to Dussel's "philosophy of liberation." Graduate students and above. R. E. Palmer; MacMurray College
