CHOICE Review

"Deconstructivist Architecture," the exhibition that closed on August 30, 1988, at New York's Museum of Modern Art, received the bad reviews it apparently deserved. Architect Philip Johnson, who has been associated with the museum for years, was assisted by Princeton's Mark Wigley in mounting the exhibition of ten projects by architects Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, Rem Koolhaas, Peter Eisenman, Zaha Hadid, Coop Himmelblau, and Bernard Tschumi. Wigley, who wrote this catalog of the show, claims that there is no connection to the deconstruction movement in literature. The models and drawings shown are in most cases hard to decipher and the text reflects the lack of clarity of purpose or intent of the show. Most architects will not share Wigley's stated admiration for a "devious" architecture, most admirers of clear prose will object to the text, and anyone interested in these few examples of "function following deformation" may look them up as previously published in the architectural magazines. -P. J. Mitarachi, Boston Architectural Center

Philip Johnson served as the first Director of Architecture at the Museum of Modern Art in 1932. In the seven decades since then, Johnson has designed some of America's landmarks, most notably his own home, the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut.
