CHOICE Review

Dunn (Univ. of Durham, England) offers a comprehensive, systematic, and historically sensitive presentation of the theology of the apostle Paul, using his epistle to the Romans as the organizing basis. The result is easily the best treatment in English of Paul's wide-ranging and highly influential Christian theology. Dunn identifies the book's main aim as twofold: to identify Paul's theological ideas and to engage in critical dialogue with his theology. The book thus devotes its nine well-organized chapters to Paul's view of such matters as God, humankind, the gospel of Jesus Christ, salvation, Israel and the church, and Christian ethics. Interacting with a remarkably wide range of scholarly literature on Paul, Dunn treats Paul's theology not as a mere historical artifact, but rather as an original perspective on some of the fundamental questions about reality and human existence. Dunn's exposition of the role of the Holy Spirit in Paul's theology is especially illuminating; it highlights the importance of Paul's identification of the Spirit with the spirit of Christ, thereby setting constraints on what counts as the influence of the Spirit. Highly recommended for all collections supporting theology, religion, or history. Upper-division undergraduate; graduate; faculty. P. K. Moser Loyola University of Chicago
