Resumen: Thomas Aquinas ranks uniquely as both one of the greatest Western philosophers and one of the most important theologians of the Christian church. In this book we at least have a modern, comprehensive presentation of his total thought. It introduces the full range of his thinking, and it relates this to writers both earlier and later than Aquinas. The book will be of considerable interest o profesional theologians and philosophers, those with an interest in medieval thought, as well as general readers.

Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The works of Thomas Aquinas, one of the greatest western philosophers as well as theologians of the Christian Church, are not only illuminating (for his questions as much as his answers) but surprisingly relevant to our concerns today. This book represents a long overdue modern comprehensive presentation of the total thought of Aquinas. While traditional studies of Aquinas invariably deal with either his philosophy or his theology, Davies introduces the full range of Aquinas's thinking, relating it to writers earlier and later than Aquinas himself. The book will be of considerable interest to professional theologians and philosophers, as well as to those with particular interest in medieval thinking. It is designed to be accessible to the general reader who has no specialist knowledge of medieval thought or professional training in philosophy or theology.

Includes bibliographical references (p. [377]-383) and index.

CHOICE Review

This book is not an introduction to the historical Thomas Aquinas, for which one must still use M.D. Chenu, Toward Understanding Saint Thomas (1964), nor does it contain an adequate biography, for which one must still use J.A. Weisheipl, Friar Thomas D'Aquino (CH, Jul'74). It is primarily an introduction to the thought of Aquinas aimed at students of philosophy and theology. It is arranged topically in 17 chapters with references ranging throughout Aquinas's works, from the nature of God and creation, negative and positive theology, perfection, eternity, knowledge, justice, and providence. Chapters 10 through 16 treat the Trinity, human nature, and Christology. The final chapter treats Aquinas on the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist. There is a select, but adequate bibliography. One misses references to Smalley on biblical study and Southern on Grosseteste (although Southern on Anselm is listed). The historical element in Aquinas's doctrines is very briefly treated. The book is thorough and economical, but it is not for beginners, not even beginners in philosophy. E. Peters; University of Pennsylvania
