Resumen: Martin Heidegger is now widely recognized alongside Wittgenstein as one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. He transformed mainstream philosophy by defining its central task as asking the "question of being", and he has had a profund impact on such fields as literary theory, theology, psychoterapy, political theory, aesthetics, and environmental studies. His thought has contributed to the recent turn to hermeneutics in philosophy and the social sciences and to current postmodern and poststructuralist developments. Moreover the disclosure of his deep in the ideology of Nazism has provoked much debate about the relation of philosophy to politics. This volume contains both overviews of Heidegger's life and works and analyses of his most important work, Being and Time. In addition there are discussions of Heidegger's thought in relation to politics, theology, cology, psychoterapy, Easternthought, and the philosophy of language. The volume also contains an in-depth study of what has been called Heidegger's second greatest work, the Beiträ zur Philosophie.

Martin Heidegger is now widely recognised alongside Wittgenstein as one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. He redefined the central task of philosophy as the investigation of the nature of being, and has exerted a profound impact on literary theory, theology, psychotherapy, political theory, aesthetics, environmental studies, as well as mainstream philosophy. His thought has contributed to the recent turn to hermeneutics in philosophy and the social sciences, and to current post-modern and post-structuralist developments. The disclosing of his deep involvement in the ideology of Nazism has provoked much debate about the relation of philosophy to politics. This volume contains both overviews of Heidegger's life and works and analysis of his most important work, Being and Time. In addition there are discussions of Heidegger's thought in relation to mysticism, traditional theology, ecology, psychotherapy and the philosophy of language. The volume also contains the first in-depth study of what has been called Heidegger's second greatest work, the Beitrage zur Philosophie.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 358-380) and index.

CHOICE Review

Rooted in the tradition of Hubert Dreyfus's "Berkeley school" (which has nurtured a "fusion of horizons" between Continental philosophy and Anglo-American traditions), editor Guignon (author of Heidegger and the Problem of Knowledge, CH, Jun'84) has selected here 13 excellent essays by prominent Heidegger scholars and philosophers. Dorothea Frede, Thomas Sheehan, and Frederick Olafson begin with a very thorough overview of Heidegger's career, including insights by Sheehan into Heidegger's association with National Socialism. The second four essays develop such major themes of Being and Time as intentionality and world in Division I (Harrison Hall), Husserl's influence on its analysis of time (Robert Dostal), its analysis of hermeneutic understanding and poststructuralist critiques (David Hoy), and the Division II account of temporality (Piotr Hoffman). A third group of essays deals with Heidegger's impact on psychotherapy (Guignon), radical ecology (Michael Zimmerman), theology (John Caputo), and aesthetics and technology (Hubert Dreyfus). In the penultimate essay Charles Taylor builds nicely on the previous ones and assesses Heidegger's contribution to our understanding of agency and language. The final essay, by Richard Rorty, is a critique of the later Heidegger using early Heidegger, later Wittgenstein, and Rorty's own pragmatism. Highly recommended for guiding advanced undergraduate and graduate students through Heidegger; an excellent entr'ee into and complement to Heidegger: A Critical Reader, ed. by Hubert Dreyfus and Harrison Hall (CH, Dec'92).
