Immunology: An Illustrated Outline is both a guide to the essential principles of immunology and a concise dictionary of immunological terms. The book can be used to consolidate understanding in preparation for course exams and medical licensing exams, or as a refresher when immunology is encountered in related life sciences, such as microbiology, virology, and zoology.
The book is organized into five sections that represent the major topics in basic and clinical immunology. The Sixth Edition has been comprehensively revised to highlight the latest understanding of the field, particularly in the areas of innate immune defenses and antibody-based therapeutics.
Concise explanations of immunological terms Full-color illustrations and micrographs to reinforce the text Each topic is set out in single- or double-page spreads Tables collate and summarize detailed informationALA COVID Relief Fund

CHOICE Review
Immunology is not a textbook, which Male (Open Univ., UK) makes plain in the preface. It more closely resembles a pocket guide to immunology. The new edition (4th ed., 2004; 1st ed., 1986) is divided into five sections, each providing an overview of a particular area. The individual sections can be likened to a dictionary, as the author notes. Rather than a broad discussion--as one might find in a textbook--each section consists of a collection of terms, some defined briefly, others more thoroughly. The interspersion of both photographs and cartoon images brings significant clarity to the subject. Material is timely, with such subjects as cytokine and chemokine regulation of cell development, often a confusing topic for those less interested in the molecular regulation of cell function, explained in a clear manner. An index of terms is found near the beginning. Male states that the guide might serve as a concise overview for those who have not studied immunology. This reviewer disagrees. What it does provide, however, is a well-written, colorful synopsis of immunology for anyone with some knowledge of the subject. The guide would serve as an excellent supplement for an immunology course. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. R.
