Ruskin (1819--1900) embodied the Victorian intellectual. He wrote about art, nature, architecture, science, and economics. His Modern Painters (5v, 1843--60) is a landmark contribution to art history and criticism. But Ruskin was also a remarkable artist himself. Hunt (Univ. of Pennsylvania) provides a rich exploration of 150 sketches and drawings by Ruskin, drawings of rolling hills, mountains, water formations, and architectural details. Ruskin was clearly a master of perspective, atmospheric science, shadow and effect, movement, line and curve. But beyond formal convention, he used his imagination to capture the mystery and local charm of the places he visited --a broken brick, a cliffy terrain, a narrow ravine, the glitter of a geological formation, a distressed wall, an ancient ruin--re-creating how he experienced it in his mind. Ruskin wanted the viewer to walk through a painting, to feel the uneven terrain, the curve of a path, the ascent of a hill, the wind and the rain. This book on Ruskin's art is a good companion to Andrew Ballantyne's John Ruskin (CH, Apr'16, 53-3351), which provides a rich biography of Ruskin. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
