Booklist Review

Everyone has a podcast these days (including Booklist), and libraries wanting to get in on the game will find this guide a good place to start. Tidal produces the City Tech Stories podcast at the New York City College of Technology at the City University of New York, and he draws on his experience and interviews he did with other librarian podcasters to present the basics. The book begins with an overview of the history of podcasts and the main types (solo, interview, narrative, etc.). Next, because podcasts are a lot of work, Tidal lays out some possible reasons a library might want to start a podcast: remote instruction, community-building, library marketing, etc. Then he goes into finding podcasts, via podcast apps or search engines. The chapter on how to create a podcast details how to use the most popular software (Audacity, GarageBand, and Adobe Audition), as well as equipment needed and tips for recording. There's also a chapter on how to produce a vodcast (a podcast with video). Tidal covers podcast development, a critical, nontechnical step, offering sample scripts and show formats; the basics of sound mixing and transcripts; and how to develop a marketing plan. The resources section includes information on copyright and creative commons, as well as plenty of suggestions of library and book podcasts to listen to. Part of Rowman & Littlefield's Practical Guide for Librarians, Podcasting lives up to the series name by giving clear advice without overwhelming those who want to start a podcast.
