The number of people in this country over the age of 65 is expected to rise dramatically in the coming years. As Baby Boomers age, many require assistance ranging from transportation for daily errands to round-the-clock medical care. Library Journal Review

Organized in dictionary format, with unsigned entries ranging from one paragraph ("Sundowning") to six-pages ("Alzheimer's disease/dementia"), this second edition of a book first published in 2007 covers a wide range of issues related to elder care-from family and caregiving to health, safety, abuse, and crime. Longer entries (there are about 250 in total) include discussions of commonly prescribed medications and caregiving suggestions, while shorter entries provide basic information such as statistics and definitions. Not intended for professionals, the entries provide a basic and occasionally superficial overview of the topic. Only a small percentage includes an additional reading bibliography, while the general bibliography includes one 2008 title and numerous 2006 and 2007 publications. Cross-referencing is also inconsistent. For example, the "Sundowning" entry does not include a See also reference to the "Alzheimer's" entry, yet the "Alzheimer's" entry provides a See also reference to "Sundowning." Kandel (Wright State Univ. of Medicine) is a neurologist and author of numerous medical books; Adamec is a medical writer who has authored several books on addiction and child abuse. Bottom Line The simple, straightforward entries lack sufficient bibliographies to be useful to the elder care professional. However, the volume's accessibility would be appreciated in public, community, and undergraduate libraries catering to introductory-level students and lay readers; purchase where needed.-Laurie Selwyn, formerly Law Librarian, Grayson Cty. CHOICE Review

Kandel (Wright State Univ. of Medicine) and Adamec (independent scholar) present a comprehensive overview of medical, psychological, legal, and other issues involved in providing care for the elderly. This guide for students and professionals includes over 250 entries with cross-references, bibliographies, and some tables. The alphabetically organized entries begin with "abuse" and end with "wills," and vary in length from a short paragraph to several paragraphs. Among the more interesting topics are "crimes against the elderly," "end-of-life issues," and "hospice." Important organizations, help-line and hotline contacts to report elder abuse by state, a section on relaxation exercises for the relief of stress and pain, and a listing of Web sites for family caregivers are among the 15 appendixes. A volume edited by M. D. Mezey et al. (CH, Feb'05, 42-3166) bears the same title, is similar in format, and includes 300 entries in considerably more detail, e.g., the entry on "dementia" includes therapies and special care units. Many of the same topics, but not all, are covered in both works. Whereas an entry titled "Gay and lesbian elders" is included in the earlier work, no comparable entry is featured in this new encyclopedia. In Mezey's edited volume, each entry is signed, and many include cross-references, keywords, and Internet resources. Both of these encyclopedias are useful. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates, practitioners, and general readers. J. C. Phillips University of Toledo
