CHOICE Review

This excellent reference is part of a series of recently published volumes on family nursing by the same editors (Families and Chronic Illness, CH, Jan '88; and Families and Life-Threatening Illness, CH, Feb '88). Contributors demonstrate both theoretical and clinical expertise in their respective fields, and they present timely topics that represent common recurring mental health issues, e.g., sexual abuse, suicide, spouse and child abuse, and posttraumatic stress disorders. Topics are presented using a case study approach, with steps in the nursing process used to organize content. Theoretical considerations relevant to the topic are presented under the assessment stage. References are included for each topic but in general do not go beyond 1984. Genograms are available for some families. Readability would be improved with the use of diagrams and charts to break up the text. Recommended for upper-division undergraduate students, graduate students, and practitioners.-A.B. Ogden, Corning Community College
