This collection of papers addresses two questions central to design and historic preservation: what are the parameters of 'compatibility' in the design of additions to historic buildings and of new infill buildings in historic districts and landscapes. Presented at the 'Third National Forum on Historic Preservation Practice: A Critical Look at Design in Historic Preservation', held at Goucher College, the authors include practicing and academic historic preservationists, architectural historians, architects, landscape architects, and engineers. Organized under the themes of 'Melding Contemporary and Historic Design', 'Design Standards in Changing Environments', 'Modernism and Post modernism in Preservation Design', and 'Engineering and Preservation', issues of compatibility are explored through diverse projects in locations across the United States from historic Charleston, SC to downtown Los Angeles.

CHOICE Review

The issue of relating design to historic settings is perhaps the most controversial subject in the preservation field. Additions to listed buildings, new buildings in historic districts, and new landscape features in historic contexts of all kinds are almost certain to engender disagreement, even though such work is central to preservation's role of managing change. Although the National Park Service has established standards for such work and many communities nationwide have developed design guidelines tailored to their particular circumstances, views on appropriateness and compatibility still vary to a marked degree. Perhaps because the topic is so prone to engender disagreement, writings that might offer further insight and direction are meager. This volume is a welcome exception. Thirteen essays by architects, engineers, academics, and members of preservation review agencies explore a spectrum of pertinent issues. The fact that many chapters are case specific--focusing on places coast to coast--will make this book especially valuable to professionals and to those preparing to enter the field. Though it makes no pretense of being comprehensive, Design and Historic Preservation deserves to become a basic text for consultation. One hopes it will inspire others to write on the subject in an equally thoughtful and lucid manner. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above. R.
