Unspoken Spaces explores Olafur Eliasson's driving interest in finding visionary shapes to represent abstract ideas. It is a richly illustrated journey through spheres, tunnels, towers, walkways and archways, as well as pavilions and larger buildings realized by Eliasson and his studio since the late 1990s.

Binding the spiralling dynamic of these works are essays by renowned writers across a variety of fields - from geologists and historians of art and science to architects, artists and philosophers.

The works range from small-scale experiments to large-scale projects in the public realm, among them striking buildings such as The Serpentine Galleries Pavilion 2007 in London (with Kjetil Thorsen), Your rainbow panorama (2006-2011) in Aarhus, Denmark, or the crystalline façade for Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre (2005-11) in Reykjavik. Each work is presented through in-depth project descriptions accompanied by Eliasson's own words.

Produced in close collaboration with the artist and his studio, this elaborate volume will appeal to art lovers, designers, students and collectors alike.

Library Journal Review

This informative, richly illustrated title explores 20 years of art making by influential contemporary Danish Icelandic artist -Eliasson, who produces site-specific sculptures, architecture, landscape design, painting, photography, and film. Through black-and-white and color photos; the artist's own words; and essays by artists, critics, and art historians, this book delves into Eliasson's provocative art, which investigates issues of perception, movement, embodied experience, and the self in relation to nature. In 1995, the artist founded Studio Olafur Eliasson, a collaborative ensemble of some 80 craftspeople, architects, designers, administrators, and assistants who help him experiment and ultimately realize his ideas. One of the contributions of this book is to show how intensely and creatively the artist and his team worked together. It's also noteworthy for illuminating his signature achievement: translating challenging and highly abstract ideas about design, architecture, and space into physical manifestations that deeply engage viewers. VERDICT Serious students of -Eliasson will appreciate the depth of discussions concerning design approaches and issues of human perception. Casual readers may feel overwhelmed but will find that the excellent images make the artwork accessible.-Michael Dashkin, New York © Copyright 2016. Publishers Weekly Review

Eliasson's first monograph in more than a decade highlights selected works that the Danish-Icelandic artist considers "equally tools for scientific measurement and dream machines." These dual aims shine in the large-scale public sculptures showcased in this volume. Obscure geometries, including Ammann lines and Goldberg polyhedra, are put to work throughout, evoking wonder in locations across the globe. Eliasson's inspirations are disciplinarily catholic, including both Wassily Kandinsky and Gilles Deleuze, and very frequently architectural, with nods to Buckminster Fuller and Bruno Taut. Many of the resulting projects are as much structures as art: one work in Copenhagen is very simply a bridge. Eliasson has internalized a very architectural sensibility that eschews or actively frustrates any ideal or privileged angle for viewing. As Eliasson writes, "Central perspective breeds ocular numbness." Many works shift constantly with the movement of light, shadow, and season: the summer lattice becomes a winter cone of ice. As the surroundings change, so does one's perception of Eliasson's installations. If readers have encountered his works in person, they'll recognize this effect; if they haven't, this book is their chance. Color illus. (May) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
