CHOICE Review

Clark, a recognized expert on wellness, has written a comprehensive introduction to wellness nursing. The author's emphasis throughout the ten chapters is the facilitation of change toward wellness in others as well as self. The approaches she suggests are grounded in practice and offer an integrated approach to wellness behavior and the promotion of self-care. Most of the strategies suggested can be accomplished by the client alone or with a peer. The author focuses on the use of strategies to assist clients to be independent and informed in health care decision making. Chapters include an introduction to wellness theory, information on relationship building, stress management, nutrition, exercise and movement, self-care, touch and healing, and environment. The inclusion of chapters on community wellness programs and research and wellness theory are excellent and a welcome addition to the literature. At the end of each chapter Clark includes beginning- and advanced-level learning experiences and a valuable list of references. Tables, illustrations, and case studies are helpful. Research-based information is identified throughout. Useful for nurses and others interested in enhancing their own wellness or that of others. Academic, professional, and public library collections.-A. Woodtli, University of Arizona
