CHOICE Review
Produced by UCLA's Now Institute, this pocket compilation was conceived by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne (UCLA), who supplies a foreword, in response to the increasing lack of appreciation for historical precedent he has perceived in students of architecture. Cornell scholars Val Warke and Andrea Simitch (The Language of Architecture, CH, Jan'15, 52-2306) collaborated with Chicago architect Eric Keune to solicit nominations from nearly 60 accomplished architects to determine the top "100 built projects essential to a young architect's education." The result is this reasonably decisive, ranked list of the most influential 20th-century structures. Each neat, two-page entry comprises one narrative paragraph, one black-and-white photograph, a floor or site plan, a cross section, a bird's-eye view, and/or an elevation. It is worth noting that the 34 US selections represent almost exclusively East Coast, Chicago, and southern California regions, aligning almost perfectly with the geographical affiliations of those responsible for the selection. However, the near universality of architect feedback received assures the validity of these selections. This book should benefit not only those in architecture programs, but also those in two-year colleges who are seeking entry to the profession. The volume includes a map of selections by continent and source lists of the architects' picks. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers. --Lucy C.
