CHOICE Review

A resource guide that provides access to 1,064 collections related to the Civil War housed in the manuscript division of the Library of Congress. The collections contain personal documents-letters, diaries, reports, and notebooks. Each entry begins with an entry number and collection title. If the collection title is a personal name, birth and death dates are included where available, followed by the individual's profession or military rank. The second part of each entry describes the nature of the material (e.g., papers, diary, memoir) and gives the number of items in the collection. Annotations briefly describe each collection's contents and scope and state whether indexes or finding aids are available. An extensive name-subject index at the back of the book refers the user to entry number. The number of items held in each collection varies widely-some collections contain a single piece, while one claims 200,000 items. Although the majority of collections were written by military personnel, there are also contributions from politicians, clergy, historians, merchants, scientists, and physicians. There are many more collections from Northern than Southern sources. Recommended for American history scholars and graduate school research.-E.J. Pine, Colby-Sawyer College
