CHOICE Review

A writer and editor on British WW II history projects, the author has produced a highly detailed work. Articles range in length from nearly three pages to four words, usually contain the names of units and commanders, and for numerous longer entries, give context and evaluation of strategies and tactics. Operations mentioned in articles usually have their own entries. Aborted operations or discarded names for operations ultimately carried out are included. Emphasis is on British activities, but all major belligerents and most geographical areas receive their due. The number of typographical or obvious factual errors is not large for a book of this type. Unfortunately, the alphabetical arrangement causes loss of continuity and some context; readers must either know the code name or browse until they find it. Subject and name indexes would enhance the value of the book, as would maps, bibliographies, and a chronology. The author captures the flavor of the war, but says little about the bitter battle to keep open Britain's vital lifeline across the Atlantic. Nowhere does he mention the significant impact of ULTRA on strategy or operations, although this information has been available for years. Only libraries collecting comprehensively in military history or the history of WW II will need this specialized, partially outdated book. Most libraries can meet their needs with Louis L. Snyder's ... Historical Guide to World War II (CH, Jun '83).-D.W. Barthell, The George Washington University
