CHOICE Review

Following a chronological framework, Hopkins (Royal Academy of Arts, London) covers the history of (mainly) Western architecture from ancient Greece and Rome to postmodernism. A one-page overview covers each era, followed by pictorial and textual examples of key stylistic elements and influences. One would expect that a book published in this format, with more beautiful color images than text, would be accessible to general readers, and most entries are. However, in some cases, the author uses convoluted sentence structure and language that makes the entries difficult to understand. For example, his turning nouns into verbs is confusing, as in this statement, "Modernism ... overturns and relativizes existing cultural hierarchies." This reviewer wishes that the author had included small images of the architecture against which the entries themselves are compared, because, in many cases, the book's intended audience likely will not be familiar with them. A table of contents, detailed index, and glossary help with navigation. A list of "further readings" assists readers who are interested in digging deeper. Overall, this is an affordable, well-illustrated overview of architectural styles. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers. --Nancy J. Mactague, Aurora University
