Resumen: "Society and the Environment examines today's environmental controversies within a socio-organizational context. After outlining the contours of "pragmatic environmentalism," Carolan explores the material world: air, water, biodiversity, and trash. He considers the pressures that exist where ecology and society collide, such as population growth and its associated increased demands for food and energy. Carolan also investigates how various ecological issues, such as climate change, are affecting our very own personal health. Finally, he drills into the social/structural dynamics--including political economy and the international legal system--that create ongoing momentum for environmental ills. This interdisciplinary text features a three-part structure in each chapter that covers "fast facts" about the issue at hand, examines its wide-ranging implications, and offers balanced consideration of possible real-world solutions. Bolstering that analysis, a variety of boxes highlight relevant case studies as well as the value judgments which lurk everywhere in talk about environmental phenomena. New to this edition are "Movement Matters" boxes, which showcase grassroots movements that have affected legislation. Discussion questions and key terms enhance the text's usefulness, making Society and the Environment the perfect learning tool for courses on environmental sociology"-- Provided by publisher.

CHOICE Review

Society and the Environment is an introductory level book written for an environmental sociology course. Carolan (sociology, Colorado State Univ.) desired a textbook that would include solutions, not just problems, and decided to write this type of work. Each chapter consists of an overview, research-based "Fast Facts," "Implications" for how the issue affects society and populations, and several "Solutions." Throughout the text, there are boxes presented with related research, ethical issues, and case studies. Each chapter also contains concept reviews, discussion questions, additional readings (besides the materials cited within the text), and suggested web links and videos. Early chapters cover greenhouse gases; food security; the effect of climate change on women, children, the elderly, and refugees; how different solutions contribute to reducing emissions; public opinion polls; the wine industry; biochar; and more. Other chapters cover waste, biodiversity, water, population, transportation, food, energy production, political economics, governance, "inequality and growth," and "pragmatic environmentalism." While designed for a college level course, this book is presented clearly enough for the self-study of how society affects the environment, how the environment affects society, and what influences those relationships. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers. --Rebecca C. Hedreen, Southern Connecticut State University
