CHOICE Review

Play as an educational vehicle for language, cognitive, and social development is the major topic of the conference at which these papers were originally presented. Play, however, emerges as a utilitarian means towards other ends. Studies that examine how teachers use play to resolve disputes in two different cultures, Italian and American, or the impact of teachers' indifference or intervention in children's play are representative of the general approach. The reader will find a useful discussion of children's moral development as well as reviews of the problems confronting early childhood educators in their advocacy of play. The research is informative; the references encourage further reading, although they focus more on social development literature than on play. In a concluding article, one author expresses concern with the gap between research and its use by preschool teachers. The model of teacher as researcher, demonstrated in Looking at Children's Play (CH, Jul'88) by P. Monighan-Nourot et al., suggests itself as a response. Undergraduate and graduate students. S.
