Booklist Review

Although undeniably a coffee-table whopper, this overview of the U.S. Marine Corps from its origins to the twenty-first century contains much solid and useful material. But then, both editors and all the contributors are marines; indeed, the present commandant, General Krulak, is one of the contributors. Besides the corps' well-known battles and campaigns, the book's historical articles cover the flag raising on Iwo Jima (an account that also relates the fates of the flag raisers and the construction of the Marine Corps War Memorial, based on Joe Rosenthal's iconic photograph), the Marine Band, all the corps' commandants and sergeants major, marine aircraft, marines in the movies, etc. The book's big format permits exceptionally good reproduction of many classic photographs and much new graphic material. So what may at first seem an extravagant puff piece is actually fit to meet the demands of serious students and admirers of the corps. --Roland Green
