CHOICE Review

This is the third edition of this popular clinical guidebook, which describes and illustrates how to conduct an effective interview with an adult patient. Writing in an easy-to-read style, Morrison (Oregon Health and Science Univ.) aims to transform the novice into a competent interviewer and enhance the experienced clinician's approach to establishing rapport and collecting data with a new patient. The book offers insights and practical strategies for helping the talkative person focus, probing the shy patient, and eliciting the important details about sensitive and touchy subjects, including sex, substance abuse, violence, and suicidal thoughts. Illustrative material is intended to help clinicians gather personal and medical history, glean the patient's mental status, and deal with confused, uncooperative, or hostile patients. Morrison then guides the reader through diagnostic criteria and a review of the major mental health diagnoses. He also discusses challenging patients, pitfalls in interview and recovery strategies, assessing strengths and opportunities for improvement in the interview, and sharing findings therapeutically with the patient. This useful volume will serve all therapists and counselors, be they in training or practicing. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students, professionals. S. M. Valente University of California, Los Angeles
