School Library Journal Review

Gr 6-9 Stefoff has done a commendable job of presenting an even-handed portrait of one of the Middle East's most controversial figures and his people. A concise history of Palestine through the early 1920s precedes a lucid and candid account of Arafat's life and political career. His personal sacrifices, wealth, family, and his evolution from terrorist to diplomat, including his willingness to accept co-existence with Israel, are noted. Information is conveyed about the heterogenous organizations that comprise the PLO, and the role of regional forces (including Israel, Syria, and Jordan) and extra-regional forces (the U.S., Soviet Union, and Great Britain) in Palestinian affairs. This is a more sympathetic examination of the Palestinian question than is usual in the west. Given the rapid pace of newsworthy events concerning the Arab-Israeli conflict, however (particularly the recent resurgence of Palestinian resistance), this is already dated. Like other books in the series, it has generally clear black-and-white photographs scattered throughout. Documentation is notably absent. A solid complement to Harry B. Ellis' excellent Israel: One Land, Two People (Crowell, 1972; o.p.). Julie Corsaro, University of Chicago Laboratory Schools (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Readers will acquire reliable information through the direct, chronological text and abundant illustrations in a biography that treats the life and political career of one of the Middle East's most controversial figures. Although the account is recently published, the Intifada--the Palestinian uprising in the occupied territories--is not covered. Part of the World Leaders Past and Present series. Gr. 6-9.
