School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-7 Despite some weaknesses and a dull format, this biography is informative and balanced. The text is readable and clear, although somewhat stiff. Romanticizing is kept to a minimum, and Hargrove warns that many legends about Boone are questionable. The small amount of fictionalized dialogue does not detract from the content. Content touches upon family life, explorations on the frontier and dealings with the Indians (friendly and otherwise). Negative aspects of Boone's life are included; Hargrove discloses that Boone lost most of his assets, primarily land, because of inattention to financial and legal details. Enough historical background is given to put Boone's activities into the context of the times. Photos, engravings and prints add interest, but they are not placed near the related text. A serious flaw is the lack of a map, which would do much to elucidate the text. A time chart listing the important events of Boone's life provides a quick overview. Daugherty's Daniel Boone (Viking, 1939; o.p.) is romanticized and dated with drawings of menacing and unpleasant-looking Indians. Gleiter and Thompson's Daniel Boone (Raintree, 1984) for younger readers covers only his explorations of Kentucky. Daniel Boone (Putnam, 1965; o.p.) by Martin and Let's Find Out About Daniel Boone (Watts, 1967; o.p.) by Martha and Charles Shapp are both written for primary grades.
