School Library Journal Review

ea. vol: illus. photogs. reprods. chron. index. (People of Distinction Series). CIP. Childrens. May 1986. PLB $8.95. Gr 4-7 While neither of these books is particularly compelling or inspiring, Morrie Turner is the better of the two. It follows Turner from his childhood in Oakland, California, where ``black boys don't be artists,'' through various discouragements and setbacks to his successful career as a syndicated cartoonist. Through the narrative and reprints of ``Wee Pals,'' readers will realize how this gentle man used the quiet statement of cartooning to become a crusader for world brotherhood. Included are many black-and-white photographs and reproductions of Turner's cartoon strips. The biography of Andersen starts out well enough by interrelating Andersen's life with his imagination and his writings. What seems a worthy premise somehow loses focus in the succeeding chapters and becomes grounded in a recitation of Andersen's trials and struggles to attain recognition as a writer. Surely the truths and realities of Andersen's life and literary contributions deserve better. Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, Va. (c) Copyright 2010.
