You are what you eat ... and you should eat brilliantly!

Your fitness, health, and well-being depend on food and proper nutrition. Yet, knowing what is in the foods we eat, learning which foods are good sources of vitamins, or understanding the effectiveness of different diets can be challenging. To help answer these questions there's The Handy Nutrition Answer Book . Covering everything from the pros, cons, and effectiveness of diets to practical eating advice, this entertaining and informative book brings the complexity of food and healthy nutrition into focus through nearly 900 well-researched answers to common questions such as ...

How do our muscles obtain energy? How are calories measured? What are some "healthier" natural sweeteners? What are some of the worst ways to cook vegetables that destroy nutrients? What recent study showed how beer can help grilled foods? How does human taste work? Does the percentage of water in our system change as we age? What's the difference between gluten sensitivity, celiac disease, and wheat intolerance? What did the ancient Roman soldiers eat? Why did so many men die from starvation during the American Civil War? What does the word "natural" mean on a label? Is there a controversy concerning farmed fish versus wild-caught fish? Why is high fructose corn syrup so controversial? Why do some people seem to eat whatever they want--and still lose or maintain their weight?
This handy reference examines, explains, and traces the basics of nutrition, the value of vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins, the science behind food-processing, the modern food industry, nutritional misconceptions throughout history, and so much more! It explains how to read food labels, what to watch for in food additives, and it also includes a helpful bibliography and an extensive index, adding to its usefulness.

Library Journal Review

Using a question-and-answer format within broadly organized chapters, science writer Barnes-Svarney (The Handy Biology Answer Book) and scientist -Svarney respond to nutrition questions. Answers range from extensive definitions to numerous pages on a specific topic-there are 17 pages on carbohydrates, for example. Despite the format, each section flows smoothly with one question leading into the next, forming an essay-style approach. Eleven chapters cover queries concerning nutrition basics, food chemistry and preservation, allergies and illness, food labeling, food history, nutrition controversies, and nutrition needs for each life stage. Useful charts such as "Beans and Their Nutrients," exciting sidebars, and black-and-white illustrations abound. Appendixes list current food safety and nutrition websites and offer diet comparisons, additional reading, and a glossary. The authors (who note that they aren't endorsing any specific foods, supplements, treatments, or diets) refer to but don't cite the various scientific studies, and cross-references lack specific page numbers. The detailed index is the most efficient access point for information on a particular topic. The diet comparison appendix is the most fascinating extra resource, as it reviews the purpose, pros, and cons of general diets (e.g., flexitarian, Mediterranean), institution-sponsored diets (e.g., Mayo Clinic, volumetrics) and popular culture diets (e.g., Atkins, Nutrisystem). VERDICT This approachable and valuable resource for nutrition students, health care professionals, and laypeople interested in nutrition information is an excellent complement to Brigitte Mars and Chrystle Fiedler's The Home Reference to Holistic Health and Healing.-Laurie Selwyn, formerly with Grayson Cty. Gr 8 Up-Readers will find information on a plethora of topics in this one-stop source for all things nutrition: vitamins, food allergens, what foods were eaten in different historical periods, preservation methods, DNA vs. RNA, food labeling, artificial sugars, gluten sensitivity, and more. The authors offer the latest scientific evidence and theories available and point users to helpful online resources, such as myplate.gov. The handy index makes looking up specific subjects easy. VERDICT A useful book, ideal for high school, college, or even adult sections public libraries.-Jane Hebert, Glenside Public Library District, Glendale Heights, IL © Copyright 2015. CHOICE Review

The Handy Nutrition Answer Book presents an eclectic assortment of food and diet-related information in a question-brief answer format. The authors, described as "a science writer" and "a scientist," have published several other books relating to science and natural history. Much of the content is factual in nature, and none of it is referenced. Citations would have been helpful for some topics, such as health risks of certain foods, artificial sweeteners, and toxins in food processing and storage, to name but a few. As with all science texts, currency is an issue. In the brief "Further Reading" section, the authors suggest that those interested in more detail enter keywords (nutrition, vegetarian) " into a search engine or your favorite online bookstore." A more helpful suggestion would have referred interested readers to the generally authoritative food safety and nutrition websites listed in appendixes 1 and 2. The intended audience for this book is unclear--entries are too brief and selective for it to serve as an all-around nutrition go-to guide. Rather, the format encourages general readers to skim through to topics of most interest to them. Summing Up: Optional. General readers. --Jane D. Saxton, Bastyr University

Booklist Review

Food-aisle claims can be bewildering and even misleading, yet health and fitness are ever more important in our busy daily lives. Knowing what foods we should or shouldn't eat has become more difficult as the varieties of packaged foods expand (as do the numbers of people who are dealing with food allergies or need special diets, such as gluten-free or low-sodium diets). This addition to a plethora of nutrition guidebooks is one of the better ones. It is well-grounded in scientific fact and easy to read. The chapters include information on micronutrients and macronutrients in foods, a little general food chemistry, and basic information about making healthy food choices, along with information on food allergies. The latter chapters discuss a few of the latest food controversies and examine the importance of eating well at various stages in the life cycle. This is recommended as a useful resource for public libraries.--Shonrock, Diana Copyright 2015 Booklist
