CHOICE Review

A National Research Council response to a request from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide advice on erosion management strategies, accumulate data, and discuss methodologies of administering these strategies. The book accomplished this goal: it is an excellent summary report, clearly written, and providing sufficient background for anyone interested in coastal zone management. The book is divided into five brief sections: description of the causes, effects, and distribution of coastal erosion; management and approaches; description of the National Flood Insurance Program; review of sample state programs (Michigan, North Carolina, Florida, and California); and shoreline change prediction. The book also contains useful appendixes that include a glossary, legal documents, and modeling information. Adequate references and index. A discussion of sea-level rise in response to global warming might have added needed perspective to the erosion problem. Recommended for anyone with an interest in the topic. -J. W. Green, University of South Carolina
