The entirely new International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences covers scholarship and fields that have emerged and matured since the publication of the original international edition. Like its predecessors, the set meets the needs of high school and college students, researchers inside and outside academia, and lay readers in public libraries.

The new set highlights the expanding influence of economics in social science research and features nearly 3, 000 entirely new articles and important biographies contributed by thousands of scholars (including several Nobel prize winners) from around the world on a wide array of global topics, including: achievement testing, censorship, personality measurement, aging, income distribution, foreign aid (political and economic aspects), food (world problems, consumption patterns), cultural adaptation, comparative health-care systems, terrorism, political correctness, agricultural innovation, legislation of morality, sexual violence and exploitation, white collar crime.

The new 2nd edition also features biographical profiles of the major contributors to the study of the social sciences, past and present.

Library Journal Review

Although the comprehensive encyclopedia is on its way out, pushed aside by the many specialized encyclopedias being published, this is a worthy successor to the 1986 International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (then published by Macmillan). The entries cast a wide net and differ in perspective from Elsevier's International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences (2001). For instance, we expect (and find) "critical theory in its postmodernist forms-[and] applied statistics and mathematical modeling in economics, psychology and sociology"; cultural studies, including race, ethnicity, and phenotype; as well as gender studies, women's studies, queer studies, Orientalism, causality, postcolonialism, and Generation X. On the other hand, we don't expect the articles subsumed under those topics, like bluegrass, slave gun cycle, whitening, alpha male, Darfur, a Spike Lee film, or Zora Neale Hurston. Editor Darity, an economist at Duke and recently director of the University of North Carolina's Institute of African American Research, has worked with some 2100 contributors, including several Nobel laureates, to produce the 3000 entirely new entries, of which 330 are biographical. A separate 20-page annotated bibliography lists significant books and articles since 1960. BOTTOM LINE This substantial revision is a worthwhile investment for most libraries, not just academic. CHOICE Review

This work updates classic sets and is a worthy successor to the 1968 work of the same name, ed. by D. L. Sills. It offers 3,000 entries by over 2,000 authors, many of whom have impressive credentials (a few are economics Nobel laureates). The 26-volume International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences (2001), ed. by N. Smelser and P. Baltes, features 4,000 articles but is much more expensive. This new nine-volume work includes an alphabetic listing and a thematic outline that lists articles according to the following categories: anthropology, archaeology, arts, media and popular culture, demography, econometrics, economic development, economics, education, geography, history and historiography, interdisciplinary studies, international relations, organization, and law. Complementing the overall annotated bibliography are individual bibliographies following many entries. A few graphs and illustrations are interspersed throughout. Most essays are written clearly and succinctly enough to benefit both laypersons and professionals.Interestingly, two "Muhammad Ali" entries are included; one deals with the Ottoman figure, and the other with the American boxer (a symbol of social and cultural change). Other interesting terms include "brain drain" and "Disneyfication" (for the carefully controlled, heavily edited images of childhood innocence and fun produced by Disney). Author Ursula Le Guin is included based on her fantasy stories dealing with sociocultural and political issues. The Matrix films are spotlighted for their depiction of a future society with rebellious hackers in the computerized realm of virtual reality. The set examines different political/social communities, e.g., Latino, Asian American, and southern US, and their influence on politics. It explores race in conjunction with economics, education, psychology, and religion. Clearly arranged and featuring numerous indexes, this work will be useful in both academic and public libraries. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels. V. Viator Nicholls State University

Booklist Review

*Starred Review* In 1969 Reference Books Bulletin described the Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (1930-35) as the authoritative statement of the state of social science of the first third of this century.  We also noted that its direct descendant, International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (1968), was destined to play the same role for our time. Now, the venerable and standard International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences is in its second edition. As the first edition was published 40 years ago, it is not surprising that there are, according to current editor Darity, no overlapping articles from the older edition. In the introduction, Darity also comments on how the scholarly discipline of the social sciences today is vastly different than that of the past. Differences in terminology and focus can be clearly demonstrated by the most cursory comparison of the articles and topics. In the second edition, there are three articles concerning civil rights; in the first, there is only a cross-reference to Constitutional law. The second has an article on masculinity, for which there is no article or cross-reference in the first. Class has several articles in the second but only a cross-reference from Class, social to several articles in the first. The second edition has several articles on gender; the first has neither articles nor cross-references. Rather than continue with this hit-or-miss comparison, it would seem best, therefore, to view the new edition as a new encyclopedia altogether. The second edition is a fine example of the current art of encyclopedia making. It is edited by a prominent scholar, and the list of contributors is extensive, including persons from academic departments and institutes of wide-ranging sizes and locations. The nearly 3,000 articles are alphabetically arranged, and most contain extensive cross-references and a bibliography. The first volume contains an alphabetical list of articles and a thematic outline, and there is a comprehensive index in the last volume. There are no illustrations except for the rare graph or formula that is essential to understanding. The articles, which seem written for an undergraduate audience rather than for scholars, cover a wide range, including topics in anthropology, arts and popular culture, economics, education, geography, history, law, psychology, and sociology, among others. A substantial number of the entries are biographical, treating not only historical figures, such as Thomas Jefferson, Niccolo  Machiavelli, and Vladimir Ilitch Lenin, who appeared in the first edition, but also more contemporary individuals, such as Bill Clinton, Henry Kissinger, and Vladimir Putin. Just as, in Darity's words, its predecessors were vital expressions of the state of the social sciences (and the sociology of the social science community) at their respective historical moments, the new edition of International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences reflects the scope of the social sciences at the start of the twenty-first century. All academic and large public libraries will want to acquire it in some format (it is also available as an e-book). Because of the reputation and history of the first edition, it is likely that most libraries will retain that one on their shelves regardless of whether they purchase the second edition.--Hoover, Danise Copyright 2008 Booklist
