Third Edition The Environmental Dictionary and Regulatory Cross-Reference The answers you need--right at your fingertips... Anyone involved in researching environmental regulations in 40 CFR knows that the only definition that matters for any environmental term is the U.S. EPA definition. Unfortunately, EPA definitions can change from one regulatory area to another, and it can be difficult to determine which section of the regulations a particular definition applies to. The Environmental Dictionary and Regulatory Cross-Reference eliminates the confusion and tedium of poring through the Code of Federal Regulations looking for the proper section or definition. Each of the nearly 6,000 definitions is cross-referenced to the section of the code in which it is found, and every possible definition is included for each term listed. Fully revised and updated with more than 1,500 new and modified definitions to reflect code changes through June 1994, The Environmental Dictionary and Regulatory Cross-Reference, Third Edition is a terrific time-saver and "headache remedy" for anyone whose work involves environmental terms and acronyms. It reduces mistakes and confusion and speeds up the process of finding the specific section of the regulation that applies to a particular situation.

CHOICE Review

The title is something of a misnomer--this is indeed a dictionary, but only of those terms used in Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR), and specific updates in the Federal Register which pertain to 40 CFR. The definitions themselves are given exactly as they appear in CFR, without further explanation. In many instances there are identical definitions for terms used in slightly different sections (e.g., Section 264.141 and Section 265.141 have the same definition of "Current liabilities"). This dictionary is primarily useful as an index to locate terms within CFR, but in some cases the user has to go through a long list when the term exists in many sections. Fully a third of this work is an appendix which reproduces the table of contents of 40 CFR; an appendix lists acronyms and abbreviations. The other useful feature is the provision of cross-references, but even then, as the author acknowledges, it is essential to read the guide to usage. Many other environmental dictionaries are designed for a broader audience, including HarperCollins Dictionary of Environmental Science (CH, Jun'92) and Harold Stevenson's Facts on File Dictionary of Environmental Science (CH, Mar'92). Neil Stoloff's Environmental Law Dictionary (1993), which gives statutory and regulatory terms, provides nontechnical definitions. Recommended only for libraries specializing in regulatory law. N.
