Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This dictionary provides scientists, science writers, and all who work in scientific publishing with a clear style guide for the presentation of scientific information. In over 9,700 entries, it reflects widely accepted usage and follows the recommendations of international scientific bodies such as IUPAC and IUPAP. The dictionary gives clear guidance on such matters as spellings (American English and British English), punctuation, abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes, units and quantities, and symbols.Revised and fully updated, this new edition of the Oxford Dictionary for Scientific Writers and Editors includes feature entries on key areas, substantially increased coverage of the life sciences, and new entries in physics, astronomy, chemistry, computer science, and mathematics. New and revised appendices also provide useful supplementary tables including SI units, mathematical symbols, the electromagnetic spectrum, and useful online resources. This comprehensive and authoritative A-Z guide is an invaluable tool for students, professionals, and publishers working with writing in the fields of physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, astronomy, mathematics, and computer science.

Previous ed.: Oxford: Clarendon, 1991.

"Adapted from The Oxford dictionary for scientific writers and editors, edited by Alan Isaacs, John Daintith, and Elizabeth Martin."

CHOICE Review

Intended for scientific writers and editors, this small "undictionary" provides extremely brief definitions, identifications, clarifications, and spellings (British and American) of scientific terms and important people. It is not a scientific dictionary per se, but a quick lookup book for terminology. No pronunciation guides are provided, illustrations are scarce, and biographies include only birth and death dates and the subject areas of acclaim. Those seeking a science dictionary should see the Academic Press Dictionary of Science and Technology (CH, Feb'93, 30-2986), ed. by C. Morris; or the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms (6th ed., CH, Mar'03, 40-3762). This second edition's 9,500-term vocabulary covers astronomy, biology, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, immunology, mathematics, microbiology, physics, and zoology. Computer science, protein biochemistry, and molecular genetics have been greatly expanded, and other fields have been revised and updated. Appendixes include SI units, symbols, various tables, and useful online resources. Reference collections are shrinking in people's homes and libraries as many facts are freely retrievable online. Although this book is useful, seasoned writers and students will use it only as a backup of last resort. Library reference collections likely will not see a demand for this title. Summing Up: Recommended. General audience (students and writers) only. J. A. Buczynski Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology

Booklist Review

This little reference book cannot be judged on the basis of its unimposing size and weight. Conceived as a companion volume to the New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors (2005) and adapted from The Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors (1991), this new volume presents as the essential A-Z style guide for use in preparing scientific material for publication, though tucked in among the alphabetized entries are five articles dealing with aspects of nomenclature. And following those are a dozen appendixes (e.g., The Electromagnetic Spectrum, Graphical Symbols Used in Electronics, SI Units ). Recommendations regarding language and usage reflect the preferences of large international bodies such as the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The principal selling points of the new edition, as compared to the 1991 version, are greatly expanded coverage of computer science, protein biochemistry, and molecular genetics, fields in which transforming developments have taken place.--Cordry, Harold Copyright 2009 Booklist
