Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Great social transformations mark both an end and a beginning . In the structural changes of the past twenty-years, Americans have struggled to defined which elements of their lives have been destroyed forever and which are in the process of being created. Swiftly fading from mind are the industrial prosperity that was guaranteed by U.S. dominance in the world economy and a shared middle-class way of life that was accessible by work and skill.

CHOICE Review

Zukin's ambitious attempt to interpret America's changing landscapes is a social science tour de force that links the research frontiers of contemporary sociology, human geography, regional economics, and urban studies. Zukin is a well-known urbanist, and this powerful work places her among today's leading scholars. She focuses on the restructuring of US social and economic life, emphasizing the roles of individual and institutional interest in shaping the spaces people inhabit. To illustrate the "creative destruction" of the US economy a process by which a way of life is both discarded and gained Zukin etches vivid portraits of five places that typify the ongoing cultural transformation: a Rustbelt steeltown, changing Motown (Detroit), an affluent outer suburban city, the gentrifying downtown, and Florida's Walt Disney World. Three introductory chapters and a penetrating finale frame these case studies. The 42 pages of notes are an impressive guide to the wide-ranging literature that underpins this integrative study. Only one major shortcoming is apparent: for a book on landscapes, this work is shockingly lacking in illustrations. Highly recommended for every US academic library as well as public libraries throughout urban America.-P. O. Muller, University of Miami
