CHOICE Review

As an effort at comparative Caribbean studies, and on that basis alone, this collection merits an accolade. Unfortunately, only 3 of the 10 essays actually compare the ``dual'' legacies (British and French) indicated in the title of the volume while the other heritages of the Caribbean (Spanish, Dutch, Danish, and US) are ignored. The essays are taken from the proceedings of a 1983 international conference, Legacies of West Indian Slavery. The collection, therefore, contains unrelated articles on politics in the Commonwealth Caribbean, questions of independence for the French D;epartement, and speculation on the economic health of both. Some of the scholarship is excellent: Sleeman's comparative study of sugar in Barbados and Martinique is incisive. Sutton's piece on the relationship of the Sugar Protocol, the Caribbean, and the EEC does an admirable job of explaining a complex economic convention. Notwithstanding Sutton's attempt to draw the contributions together in his introduction, the volume lacks coherency as a comparative work, but can be recommended to special collections for its generally high standard of analysis.-R.
