More an introductory rundown on mental illness than a discussion of drugs, this covers a range of major mental illnesses, including those that generally affect teenagers. The author discusses depression and mania, schizophrenia, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, obsessive-compulsive behavior, anorexia nervosa and bulimia, and hysteria. For each he considers what is known about causes (frequently citing the Freudian view), symptoms, and available treatments. A fascinating survey that, unfortunately, has only minimal documentation and no footnotes. A list of books and articles for further reading, a glossary, and an index are appended. Gr. 7-10.
