Library Journal Review

This title is a jewel of a ready-reference guide for busy librarians, i.e., all of us. First published in 1991, this digest of many articles and essays on a librarian's world of subjects is here revised and updated, building solidly on the earlier editions while keeping the flavor and usefulness of the previous incarnations. Seekers now can also find here brief introductions and starting points for trends and new developments. The major sections are about libraries as institutions (included here is statistical information), the people of the library, e.g., staff, trustees, and supporters; the library profession; library materials; operations; library users; advocacy; technology; hot-button issues; and trivia. Sources are cited for each article, essay, and list. While the focus is primarily on the latest and greatest, acknowledgment of historical libraries and legacy library services is not forgotten. VERDICT With a wide variety of contributors, the results are mixed, but overall the content is balanced between practical and whimsical. Despite some statistical currency issues, this is highly recommended as a quick starting point and pathfinder to more information for library- and librarian-related subjects. For both the newly minted and the well-experienced librarian.-J. Sara Paulk, Wythe-Grayson Regional Lib., Independence, VA (c) Copyright 2013. CHOICE Review

The fifth edition of this handbook is a complete rewrite of the previous edition (4th ed., CH, Jul'06, 43-6227). It is an excellent reference manual for those new to the library profession or those looking for a quick and simple refresher course on both basic and advanced aspects of librarianship. The book's title does not fully reflect what a remarkable introduction to the field of librarianship this volume is. Overall, its value lies much more in the collection of article reprints it offers than in the library statistics, facts, and information on library awards/scholarships it presents. The book is structured around ten chapters, each of which focuses on a different aspect of the profession ("Libraries," "People," "The Profession," "Materials," "Operations," "Users," "Advocacy," "Technology," "Issues," and "Librariana"). Chapter 5, "Operations," has several very good informational pieces for new administrators as well as library school students. For instance, Jean Weihs's "A History of Classification" is a wonderful summary of the hierarchies of knowledge that have existed. It would be useful for new administrators looking for scholarly support for a reclassification project, though it leaves out reference to the Pettee classification system used in US theological libraries throughout the 20th century (and still used by Australian theological schools). Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students and professionals/practitioners. E. E. Boyd Chicago Theological Seminary

Booklist Review

Like the four previous volumes in the Whole Library Handbook series, this update collects material from a variety of other sources and pulls it together into an interesting and fun guide, providing librarians with an eclectic combination of equal parts resources, advice, factoids, and inspiration. Much of the content comes from sources copyrighted by the American Library Association, including ALA's guidelines, books, and American Libraries magazine. Material is divided into the same 10 broad categories as the previous editions, covering such areas as the profession, library operations, technology, and advocacy. This volume concentrates on source material from 2006 to 2012, and 98 percent of the content is new to this edition. It is almost impossible to open this work to a section that fails to be entertaining, inspiring, and instructional. The Whole Librarian Handbook 5 delivers a strong update to this series that will not disappoint readers familiar with the earlier volumes.--Tyckoson, David Copyright 2010 Booklist
