CHOICE Review
In this third edition, Seligman (emer., George Mason) and Reichenberg (Marymount Univ.) provide clinicians with a comprehensive and systematic guide for treatment of mental disorders based on the most recent evidence-based research. Seligman developed the mnemonic "Do a Client Map" for the assessment framework used to guide clinicians' treatment design decisions: Diagnosis, Objectives/outcomes, Assessments, Clinician characteristics, Location of treatment, Interventions, Emphasis of treatment, Numbers, Timing, Medications, Adjunct services, Prognosis. The authors discuss the multiple theoretical approaches to treatment, the importance of the therapeutic alliance, and many of the disorders identified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: DSM-IV-TR (4th ed., 2000). They include many lucid case studies to help health care professionals develop well-structured and effective treatment plans for clients. The last chapter speculates on the future of diagnosis and treatment planning, with an emphasis on the effects of neurobiology, genetics, pharmacology, the creation of a new classification of mental disorders (DSM-V), evidence-based practice expectations, and computerized counseling. The reference list is meticulous and the writing exceedingly readable. As the text's title suggests, this is indeed a comprehensive and systematic guide to the treatment of mental disorders.
