CHOICE Review

The standard works in Hispanic American theater history are drawn from three recognized theater historians, Jorge Huerta (e.g., Chicano Theater, CH, Oct'82), John W. Brokaw, and this reviewer (e.g., Footlights Across the Border, 1989), all of whom have published in the leading journals in theater history and criticism and have presented their findings at all of the national conferences in their field. Kanellos has published mainly with Arte Publico Press, which he edits, has appeared at one national conference, and has no publications in major theater history journals. This book clearly lacks the approach of a theater scholar, failing to provide an adequate examination of the vast amount of data compiled. Divisions by theaters in Los Angeles, San Antonio, New York City, and Tampa serve as chapter headings. The author discusses amateur, professional, and popular entertainment almost simultaneously, along with motion pictures and screen actors. The reading and value of this text are seriously hampered by the lack of attention to chronology and interpretation of data and poor organization of place, time, and events. Not recommended for students or serious researchers attempting to understand the multicultural contributions to American theater history. E. C. Ramirez University of Arizona
