The world's urban population now exceeds the world's rural population. What does this mean for the state of our cities, given the strain this global demographic shift is placing upon current urban infrastructures? Following on from previous State of the World's Cities reports, this edition uses the framework of 'The Urban Divide' to analyze the complex social, political, economic and cultural dynamics of urban environments. In particular, the book focuses on the concept of the 'right to the city' and ways in which many urban dwellers are excluded from the advantages of city life, using the framework to explore links among poverty, inequality, slum formation and economic growth. The volume will be essential reading for all professionals and policymakers in the field, as well as a valuable resource for researchers and students in all aspects of urban development. CHOICE Review

This latest State of the World's Cities (e.g., CH, Oct'05, 43-1272; CH, Apr'09, 46-4749) presents a wide range of comparative statistical data collected by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) related to economic and social disparities as well as economic trends in urban areas across the world's regions. The work is divided into three sections: Urban Trends, The Urban Divide, and Bridging the Urban Divide. Urban Trends focuses on trends in wealth and on slum dwellers among the world's cities. The Urban Divide chapter is further broken down into sections on the urban, economic, spatial, opportunity, and social divides within and across the world's urban areas. The final portion of the volume, Bridging the Urban Divide, discusses the implications of the data to the policy goals associated with inclusive cities. The statistics in the volume are supported by a wide range of photographs, tables and charts, and case examples from particular cities in different regions, as well as "Quick Facts" and "Policy Points" in each section. Of considerable interest and utility to scholars and students working in urban studies, urban planning, and related disciplines. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels/libraries. M. E. Pfeifer Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi
