CHOICE Review
Ching (emer., Univ. of Washington) brings to architectural novices his essential texts and drawings in Introduction to Architecture. A renowned architect, Ching has authored numerous architecture and design books in his extensive career. Here he teams with Eckler (Marywood Univ. School of Architecture) to compile an introductory text that covers the many facets of architecture in a concise and coherent manner. A compilation of material from eight quality Wiley architectural publications, this volume showcases Ching's graphical design of spaces, buildings, and cities. In an easy-to-understand format, readers can explore the history and theories of architecture, technical aspects of the profession, and design elements/processes. This book is divided into chapters of approximately 30 to 50 pages spanning broad concepts; thorough explanations of architectural terminology are included, along with a helpful glossary. For those pursuing an architectural career or for those who love architectural design and drawing, this is a beautifully illustrated and comprehensive guide to the subject. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and general readers. C. A. Groves Middle Tennessee State UniversityBooklist Review
This specialty survey text compiles the major works of noted architect Ching into a brief overview of the issues and practices of architecture. This is an ambitious goal to achieve in under 432 pages, including glossary and index, especially since fully half are devoted to Ching's architectural drawings. The book is roughly organized into two sections: episteme (history, theory, design elements and processes) and techne (methods, materials, other technical aspects). Despite the difficult-to-read font (based on Ching's own hand lettering), this inexpensive and highly graphic volume is a good introduction to the discipline for both students and interested laypeople.--Harmon, Lindsay Copyright 2010 BooklistNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
