Booklist Review

Gr. 7-10. The fourth president's public service spans a period from the prerevolution when he became obsessed with the political struggles between the colonists and the British to the 1830s when he devoted himself to the problems of slavery. Madison, though lacking Washington and Jefferson's charisma, was regarded as a man of pure integrity and fine intellect. Leavell notes that Madison's greatest contributions were in convening the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and his efforts in securing ratification of the Constitution and support for the adoption of the Bill of Rights. His 50-year friendship with Jefferson included being his secretary of state. Madison's own two terms were served during a difficult period in the young nation's history as regional and party tensions divided America, and his skills of executive leadership, according to the author, did not come as naturally to him as had his work with the legislature. The smooth objective text is expanded by extensive illustrations. PW. 973.5'1 (B) Madison, James / Presidents [OCLC] 87-26580
