Booklist Review

Gr. 7-10. Each book in the new American Voices Series traces the history of an ethnic group from the earliest visitors to America to its present status of immigration and acculturation. There are marked similarities between the various groups' experiences in this country. All groups had to struggle with a new language; all encountered prejudice; all relied on family and community support; all have made indelible contributions to the common culture. Displaying careful research and timeliness, the readable texts provide positive images but strive for balance by citing qualities or characteristics that have led to problems with the American mainstream. Each book is illustrated with maps, charts, and black-and-white photographs, and also contains a glossary, a timeline, extensive bibliographies of print and nonprint materials, and a list of resource groups. For other titles, check the Series Roundup in this issue. ~--Sheilamae ~O'Hara
