Merchants in Puerto Rico have used tokens for different reasons. During the 19th century and the early 20th century the lack of circulating currency on the island forced many merchants to rely on their own tokens which were given as change to their customers. Today merchants use tokens for promotional purposes or to serve specific services of their businesses. This catalog provides information and pictures of the merchant tokens of Puerto Rico to numismatists and readers interested in this aspect of Puerto Rican history. In addition to merchant tokens this catalog includes: encased coins, social clubs tokens, transportation tokens and military tokens. This book includes: •Coin descriptions including accurate measurements •Rarity index •Historical information of the businesses, their location and their owners •Pictures of tokens in color
Includes endnotes (p.215-223) and index.
