Booklist Review

Nothing enables the designer, seamstress, or tailor to immediately visualize a garment's proportions, line, and balance like draping. Early in this century, when the three-dimensional dress form was introduced, Parisian designers Madeleine Vionnet and Alix Gres established draping more as an art form than the clothing ``necessity'' of antiquity. Certainly not promising to deliver such artistry as a Vionnet or Gres-- draping does take years to master-- this book offers intelligible, detailed instructions and illustrations bound to lead to design and construction improvement. From an introduction to the dress form and fabric composition to design shapes and finally notching theory and design analysis, Amaden-Crawford's informative guide will be valued by seasoned clothiers and novices alike. No index. -- Janet Lawrence
