Library Journal Review

The appearance of Racinet's History of World Costume between 1876 and 1888 was a landmark in publishing history: this six-volume classic was the first large-scale costume book to use high-quality color photography in the reproduction of its sumptuous lithographs. Somewhat eccentric in coverage, it encompassed Europe and lands from Japan to the Arctic Circle and North America but excluded the American colonies. The present volume condenses Racinet's work and translates it into English for the first time. Its 2000 color reproductions cover the upper classes and royalty, as most costume books do, but, more importantly, also depict the working classes, soldiers, and the poor. Though this edition sacrifices glossary and bibliography and pares down the original, it is highly recommended for lay reader and scholar alike. Daniel J. Lombardo, Jones Lib., Inc., Amherst, Mass. CHOICE Review

Albert Racinet published Le Costume Historique in 1888. It contained 2,000 pages in six large-format volumes, five containing 500 plates of world costume drawn from original and secondary sources. This is the first English-language edition, excepting a 1987 Dover Publications selection of 92 Western European plates. With help from the Courtauld Institute (London), an expert team has performed a commendable service in bringing out this highly edited but otherwise faithful translation. It would be economically prohibitive to recreate the monumental original, and choices have been made for elimination, mostly wise and logical, concentrating on European historic dress. Like the original, this edition is divided into four parts: "The Ancient World," "Nineteenth Century Antique Civilizations," "Europe from Byzantium to the 1800s," and "Traditional Costume of the 1880s." The color reproduction is excellent and the 148 plates are mostly original size. The text has been severely edited and reduced, and placed with the sometimes reordered plates that appear on alternate pages opposite the Racinet captions. The fine introduction by costume authority Aileen Ribeiro explains the original and this edition--Racinet's errors and shortcomings are well handled. This excellent, highly accessible work puts a classic reference within the reach of every library. -Z. H. Weisfeld, University of Michigan
