For the last three decades Jock Young's work has had a profound impact on criminology. In this provocative new book, Young rejects much of what criminology has become, criticizing the rigid determinism and rampant positivism that dominate the discipline today. His erudite and entertaining examination of what's gone wrong with criminology draws on a range of research - from urban ethnography to sexology and criminal victimization studies - to illustrate its failings.

Young makes a passionate case for a return to criminology's creative and critical potential, partly informed by the new developments in cultural criminology. A late-modern counterpart to C. Wright Mills' classic The Sociological Imagination , this inspirational piece of writing from one of the most brilliant voices in contemporary criminology will command widespread attention. The concluding part of the author's trilogy of influential texts including The Vertigo of Late Modernity and The Exclusive Society , it will be essential reading for anyone who cares about the future of criminology, and the social sciences more generally.

CHOICE Review

Young (CUNY, John Jay College) uses the perspective of C. Wright Mills to shed light on what he perceives to be the problems with modern criminology. Using Wright's The Sociological Imagination (1959) as a template for comparison, Young suggests that even as the sociological view frequently detaches and looks downward at a subject, the criminological view does so even more. He suggests that the traditional lens of criminology "focuses on those who are seen to inhabit special universes, economically detached, spatially segregated, and morally reduced." Young argues that as criminologists have insisted on empiricism and strived for credibility as scientists, they have become far too dependent on statistical data. He suggests that there exist two criminologies: one based on the critical tradition and housed in sociology as an overarching discipline and another that is rather one-dimensional and driven more by the "culture of control." The first is aimed at understanding criminal behavior, the second only at controlling it. In this well-written, well-reasoned text, Young presents the argument that criminology as a pursuit is in need of reform; criminologists have devolved to serve the wrong master. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. F. E. Knowles Valdosta State University
