CHOICE Review

In this excellent guide to the science of personal exercise training, Brooks provides a book worthy of instructional use at the undergraduate level in courses associated with physical fitness for life enhancement. The language and content are clear and reflect in-depth knowledge of the subject area. The book is divided into four major sections: "Defining Program Design"; the "Science behind Exercise Programs"; "Bridging Science into Program Design"; and "Building More Bridges." These sections offer accurate information to novices in the field of physical fitness, and to veteran instructors looking to enhance personal knowledge without feeling out of their depth in scientific or physiological areas. Brooks provides quick indexes allowing for easy reference to expanded information within the text. The "key points" notations offer supportive statements as take-home messages, and the "bridges" serve to synthesize important aspects of each chapter. References and recommended readings offer avenues for further research in related areas. Recommended for undergraduate students in a supervised setting, and personal trainers with a basic knowledge of components of physical fitness and training, and of exercise program design. Not recommended for unsupervised personal usage. K. Poole University of North Carolina at Greensboro
