Presenting the state-of-the-art for the theory and practice of qualitative inquiry, this landmark Handbookhas been a publishing phenomenon in the human sciences since it first published in 1994. As with earlier editions, the Fourth Edition is virtually a new volume. Representing the best thinking from top scholars from around the world, the new edition continues the book′s tradition of synthesizing an existing literature, defining the present, and shaping the future of qualitative research. The editors and contributors address issues of social justice and examine how people′s struggles can inform public issues and in turn be transformed into social policy. Their writings are underpinned by a critical framework, and they are committed to addressing issues of inequality. As with previous editions, their aim is to show how the practices of qualitative research can effect change in the world in positive ways. Praise for the Third Edition:
"Like previous editions, this offers the most comprehensive analysis in a single volume of the theories, techniques, and foundational thought underpinning qualitative inquiry.... Highly recommended." -- CHOICE: Current Reviews for Academic LibrariesIncludes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review
Like previous editions, this offers the most comprehensive analysis in a single volume of the theories, techniques, and foundational thought underpinning qualitative inquiry, with parts representing specific areas, e.g., "Strategies of Inquiry" and "The Future of Qualitative Research." More than half of the 42 chapters are by new authors, with most other chapters substantially revised. Of the 16 totally new topics, most welcome are chapters on online ethnography, narrative inquiry, and the process of qualitative evaluation and social policy making. Chapter 1 provides an overall analysis of qualitative research. Other chapters identify key issues and problems, review and evaluate pertinent research literature, and offer insights into and deep analysis of the practice and theories of qualitative inquiry related to specific topics. The final two chapters help chart the future of qualitative inquiry. Chapters include tables, charts, graphs, other illustrations, and comprehensive lists of references. Political and social action issues emerge as the dominant themes in this edition. This is likely a response to what the editors label as growth in "neoconservative discourses" and the current focus on "evidence-based epistemologies." Thus the Handbook continues to be not only a reference book on methodologies, but also a representation of the current condition of qualitative research. The challenge is that examination of issues and methodological approaches falls in and out of view because the field is too dynamic to hold the entirety of research in one volume. For example, this edition omits discussion of life history research, a topic included previously. Because each edition is essentially a new contribution, a serious researcher would need to own all three. This exceptionally well-written text, dense and deeply rooted in scholarly analysis, is not aimed at the novice practitioner. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
