Encompassing some of the most iconic images of the 20th century, from New York's famous Subway signs to the bold bags of Bloomingdale's department stores, Vignelli designs have become part of contemporary culture, and this inspirational book takes readers on an aesthetic, alphabetical journey from Helvetica to Style, Typography and of course the Vignellis themselves: the names behind the names. There are also insights into the inspiration behind interiors, dinnerware, furniture, fashion, newspapers, magazines and architecture, all captured with typical Vignelli typographical flair. "An architect should be able to design everything from the spoon to the city," repeats Massimo Vignelli, and this talented duo have certainly done that.--From publisher description.

CHOICE Review

Whether realized or not, we have probably encountered the designs of Massimo Vignelli and Lella Vignelli, founders of the firm Vignelli Associates. The New York City subway map, stacking melamine dishes and fiberglass chairs, Bloomingdale's shopping bags, and scads of books and magazines carry their trademark. These disparate projects are playfully amalgamated and analyzed in this book--Massimo's alphabetized thoughts on design ranging from the practical (lighting, objects, packaging) to the conceptual (ambiguity, discipline, responsibility). The brief, generously illustrated texts are replete with information about the nuts and bolts of design work and definitions of design categories and criteria, marking them as products of lectures presented at the School of Design and Architecture at Harvard University, where Vignelli teaches a summer course. Most interesting, though, are Vignelli's detailed explanations of his design choices for specific projects and more theoretical excursions into the metaphorical role of design in society. For those seeking a more linear account of Vignelli's career, he includes a biographical essay at the beginning of the book. As one would expect from a veteran book designer whose work includes the ubiquitous Audubon Field Guides, this volume is both lucidly structured and delightful to behold. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and researchers. K. Rhodes Hollins University
