CHOICE Review

This is McDonald's best book and, indeed, is now the best single volume on the origins of the US Constitution and the accomplishment of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. McDonald treats the Constitution from the point of view of intellectual history, incorporating in his account the revisionist history of the past generation that emphasizes the English, Scottish, and French contributions to American political thought. Most of Novus Ordo Seclorum is devoted to a rigorous analysis of 18th-century thought (political theory, political economy, and law). It is solidly grounded in the most recent scholarship and based upon a very original reading of the primary sources. McDonald writes with uncommon grace; the book is a pleasure to read, but it is nevertheless densely and rigorously argued. The documentation is lavish, and the bibliographic information meticulous. This is not a book to be skimmed, nor will it flatter the simpleminded patriot. It represents the culmination of a lifetime's study by one of the most original historians of early America. It will provoke dissent from the knowledgeable, for some of McDonald's views are iconoclastic, but no reader will regret the hours devoted to this work.
