CHOICE Review
Just as graphic design history became an indispensable subject for graphic designers in the 1980s, so it seems that graphic design theory is the next necessary field of development. Toward that end, the Board of International Research in Design has begun publishing a series of books for graduate students and academic designers. The first two books, Nigel Cross's Designerly Ways of Knowing (2006), and Design Research Now (2007), ed. by Ralf Michel, paved the way. This newest work provides a dictionary that is much more than a dictionary. Arranged alphabetically according to salient design topics, it is really something of an encyclopedia. Topics including such broad subjects as "criticism," "crossover," "heuristics," and "symbol" lead to provocative discussions of major issues that, consciously or unconsciously, guide the development of design. This important new series is crucial for any university with a graduate program in architecture or graphic design. It also will be useful for undergraduates. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
