Planeta recently launched a new literary prize, Casam'rica, strictly for Latin American writers. The first winner of this prestigious award is Pablo De Santis, for "El enigma de Par's." The novel opens in 1889, when twelve renowned detectives, from around the world, unite in Paris to discuss their most celebrated cases and the philosophy behind each investigation. But when one of the detectives is mysteriously murdered on the grounds of the Eiffel tower, which coincidently is being constructed at the very same time, the detectives realize that a criminal mastermind is determined to not only outshine their deductive reasoning, but to destroy each and every one of them.

Publishers Weekly Review
Chilean-born novelist Bolaño (1953-2003) has been hailed as one of the greatest voices ever to emerge from Latin American literature. After the writer's untimely death, literary critic Ignacio Echevarría rushed the publication of the author's 1000-plus page masterpiece, 2666. Earlier this year, the critic recovered two unpublished works from Bolaño's computer: a poetry collection, La universidad desconocida ("The Unknown University") and this anthology of essays and other writings. Although the texts-some of them apparently unfinished-are not likely to go down in history as major examples of Bolaño's immense talent, they are valuable reminders of it. Through short stories, essays, and autobiographical sketches, this compilation delivers the writer's signature hypnotic style, coated with his erudition and ever-present dark humor. Case in point: the unclassifiable "Sabios de Sodoma" ("Wiremen of Sodom"), the recounting of Trinitarian writer V.S. Naipaul's travels in Buenos Aires, where he becomes increasingly disgusted with the Argentinians' obsession with anal sex. Bolaño's fans will particularly enjoy the pieces featuring poets Arturo Belano (Bolaño's alter ego) and Ulises Lima, the unforgettable protagonists in Los detectives salvajes [see review 10/15/2005] (Anagrama, 1996; The Savage Detectives, FSG, 2007). In Las jornadas del caos, Belano travels to Berlin in search of his lost son, while the narrator obsessively repeats the phrase "this happened in 2005"-two years after Bolaño's death. Zealous Bolaño buffs will truly appreciate all this material. Everyone else should run to the library and read Los detectives salvajes first. Highly recommended for bookstores and libraries with a solid Bolaño collection.-Carlos Rodríguez Martorell, Corona, NY (The Paris Enigma)De Santis, Pablo. The winner of the first Premio Iberoamericano Planeta Casa de América [see 5/1/2007], the critically acclaimed Argentinian De Santis [see Crime and Guilt, 9/1/2007] has published several well-received novels including La traducción (1998), Filosofía y Letras (1999), and El Teatro de la memoria (2000). His latest takes place in Paris during the 1889 World Fair. There, The Twelve Detectives, the most famous detectives in the world, are to meet an expose their secrets and most impressive cases to the public. But their rendezvous is cut short when one of the Twelve dies under mysterious circumstances, falling from the yet unfinished Eiffel Tower. Together, the remaining detectives embark on this mysterious case that leads them on a fascinating adventure through the streets of Paris. Addictive and exhilarating, De Santis's novel centers on the classical figure of the detective, and delves into the very nature of the enigma. The novel's complexity unravels in the author's sophisticated prose, making for a pleasurable and enlightening read. Recommended for bookstores and academic and public libraries looking to expand their Spanish fiction collection.Andrea Montejo, New York City(c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
